UIW’s Community Health Education (CHED) program, an interdisciplinary program housed in the Ila Faye Miller School of Nursing and Health professions, has earned full accreditation from the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH).
On Tuesday, June 21, the UIW Office of Mission and Ministry hosted a group of students and employees for a tour of four of San Antonio’s historic Missions: Mission San Francisco de la Espada, Mission San Juan Capistrano, Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo and Mission Concepción.
At new student orientation every summer, UIW’s newest Cardinals fly into the Nest as official students for the very first time. The Office of Admissions hosted its first orientations of the summer on Friday, June 24 and Wednesday, June 29, and the UIW community welcomed attendees with open arms.
UIW’s Autonomous Vehicle Systems Laboratories (AVS Labs), in association with the UIW Girls in Engineering, Math, and Science (GEMS) program, launched its second annual summer internship initiative in partnership the Army Education Outreach Program (AEOP) on Monday, June 6. The internsip program consists of two educational opportunities for local high school girls.

The dedicated servant and educator announced she will retire from her position as Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at UIW at the end of July 2022.
Coming off its most successful year on and off the playing field, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) has recommitted to continue its Division I athletics program in the Southland Conference. UIW had accepted an invitation to join the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) effective July 1, 2022. UIW has informed the WAC that it will not proceed with becoming a member.
The UIW Leading a Diverse Workforce class, taught by Dr. Teresa Harrison, professor and coordinator of UIW’s Management department, invites Master of Business Administration students to take a closer look at diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) and how embracing diversity contributes to better workplace environments for all. The course aims to expose business students to what their role will be as future business managers in regard to reducing prejudice, improving psychological safety and contributing to social justice in the workplace and beyond.
The University of the Incarnate Word has been invited to participate in the Institute on Teaching and Learning for Campus-wide Interfaith Excellence and the Institute on Interfaith Excellence (IIE) for the second year in a row by Interfaith America and the American Association of Colleges and Universities.
Ten learners and three faculty members from the University of the Incarnate Word Feik School of Pharmacy lived out this command, using the gifts of medicine and compassion on a mission trip held from May 14 – 21. The group travelled to Las Piedras, Puerto Rico, where they served the Celia Mondriguez Elderly Center and residents of the local community. The trip was a collaborative effort with the National Hispanic Pharmacy Association and the UIW Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability.
In January, the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM), the UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT), Ortho-SA and CHRISTUS Health partnered to form Amigos en Medicina (AEM). Together they are providing free hip and knee arthritis evaluations for Southside residents in San Antonio. The second AEM clinic held in May partnered the UIWSOM, SoPT, Ortho-San Antonio, CHRISTUS Health and River City Produce to follow up with 12 patients, tracking their progress from the inaugural AEM clinic held in January.
Dr. Timothy Wingert, retired dean and professor in the University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO), received the Fulbright Specialist Program Award from the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.
The teaching partnership between the University of the Incarnate Word and Medio Creek Elementary School has never been stronger. Dr. Paulo Carvalho, UIW associate professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, is researching ways to combad malaria, and he has been awarded two National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grants to use for this purpose.
From the Development Board to the Board of Trustees, Scott Beckendorf has been serving and supporting UIW for almost three decades. His family ties to the University, however, stretch back much farther. In the 1940’s, Jeanette Herrmann Longoria and Ayleen Herrmann Radke, the aunts of Scott’s wife Karin, graduated from then-Incarnate Word College. More recently, the Beckendorf’s daughter, Sophie Rose Beckendorf, graduated from UIW in 2018.
For Dr. Ricardo Carrion ’98, the decision to attend the University of the Incarnate Word was an easy one. In addition to his family’s bond with the Sisters, he loved the school’s Catholic identity and small class sizes, as well as the enthusiasm of the instructors who encouraged his passion for biology.
As a group of nine students crossed the stage on a cloudy Mexico City afternoon on June 21, 2008, history was made. UIW became the first American university to confer a collegiate degree on a Mexican campus. For Atzel Jonatan Peña, BBA ’08, MBA ’20, being a member of the first graduating class is something he holds dear to his heart. This pioneer group of Cardinals is remembered as the group paving the way for all subsequent classes.

UIW is proud to announce that the Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP) graduating Class of 2021 led the State of Texas by finishing No. 1 in the state on the North American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX). The NAPLEX is a standardized test that is considered one of the last steps before a student becomes a licensed pharmacist. This is the second year in a row that FSOP students led the state.
UIW is proud to announce it has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to fund further research into kidney disease and diabetes. The $300,000 grant will specifically go into research regarding an enzyme, Duox2, and how it effects those with kidney disease.

Robert Seddon made his latest contribution that will change the lives of UIW students and South Texans. A $100,000 gift brings the total of the Ingrid Seddon Endowed Scholarship in Osteopathic Medicine to $400,000. It is the largest endowed scholarship fund benefitting students at the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine.

Tim Taggart, a Special Olympics athlete, was one of 22 participants in the 2022 Amazing Race of Hope, held April 29 by the UIW Special Olympics Club and Calvary, a local nonprofit run by Dr. Traci Edmond from the UIW H-E-B School of Business and Administration. The Liza and Jack Lewis Center of the Americas at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to have hosted the first Leaders of the Americas Speaker Series on March 30, 2022. The series will allow the UIW community, students, faculty and staff to hear from dignitaries and statesmen who have impacted society through their leadership. The inaugural lecture was a historic moment for UIW, with Mr. Vicente Fox, 62nd President of Mexico, delivering a speech titled “Immigration: Challenges and Opportunities for the Next Generation of Leaders.” Fox’s presentation also focused on leadership and, after the speech, Fox and UIW President Dr. Thomas M. Evans signed a historic memorandum of collaboration.
When Cameron Preston, a Kinesiology and Education major with an anticipated graduation date of May ’23, decided to attend UIW, it was to play football. He did not know much about the University, but after visiting campus, he knew this is where he wanted to be.
UIW is proud to announce the start of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) program. Under the guidance of Dr. Ruth Ford, the first director of the UIW OTD program, the University will be seeking full accreditation in May 2023 and will start accepting student applications for the program in July 2022 in anticipation of the August 2023 start date. The doctoral graduate program is comprised of 8 semesters, 112 credit hours, that can be completed full-time in 33 months.

Mary said “yes” to God’s call to become the mother of Jesus, and it is because of this moment that the Word became incarnate and walked on earth. The University of the Incarnate Word celebrates this response through Incarnate Word Day, held annually on March 25 on the Feast of the Annunciation.
Twenty University of the Incarnate Word students traveled to Tierra Blanca, Mexico, for a unique learning experience. There, they were able to see the traditional Otomi ceremonies, including the meeting and delivery of Cuelga, items created by the artisans of the Indigenous community. These are traditions preserved today in the community. The trip aided the students in their academic research project on the Chichimeca and Otomí cultures, which aims to generate actions that favor the community.
The University of the Incarnate Word is pleased to announce that the 2022 CCVI Spirit Award winner is Angela Lawson, senior associate director of Athletics/Academic Affairs and Senior Woman Administrator (SWA). The CCVI Spirit Award recognizes a member of the faculty, administration or staff who has demonstrated, in service to the University and/or to the broader civic community, the spirit of the founders, the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. The Mission of the University flows directly from this spirit.
Thirty students from University of the Incarnate Word School of Math, Science and Engineering attended the Texas Academy of Science’s (TAS) 125th annual meeting at the University of Houston Clear Lake. Sixteen of the 30 students presented, sharing posters and research projects.
At UIW, Earth Month is designed to build up to Earth Day, April 22, raising awareness among students and faculty and encouraging them to take action on that day and moving forward. Earth Day began in 1970, with nearly 10 percent of the American Population taking part in the inaugural celebration. The day is now recognized on a global scale.
Dr. Dede Rios, director of Optometric and Clinical Library Services for the Rosenberg School of Optometry, received a $3,000 subaward from Texas A&M University’s Libraries and Veterans National Forum. Rios initially worked with a diverse group of librarians from all over the United States to create toolkits for libraries to use to initiate programming. She is now working with the UIW Military and Veterans Center to implement use of the funding.
Like many of the University of the Incarnate Word’s international students, Oleksandr Karpenko is far from his home country of Ukraine and a bit out of his comfort zone. He transferred to UIW in 2018 for a chance to compete on a Division I swim team in the United States, but he found much more than a way to compete in the pool.
The University of the Incarnate Word Office of Career Services invites members of the community to join it for Women in Leadership – a panel discussion of women in leadership roles sharing their influences, challenges and successes along with words of advice for young women. The panel discussion will take place on Wednesday, March 23, from 3 - 5 p.m. CT in the Student Engagement Center Ballroom.
Each spring, the University of the Incarnate Word community comes together as “One Word” to work towards “One Goal” – raising funds to support current and future UIW students. UIW’s fourth annual Day of Giving, known as “One Word. One Goal.,” will be celebrated for 1881 minutes, in honor of the University’s founding year, during Incarnate Word Week beginning March 23.
Veronica G. Martinez Acosta, PhD, professor of Biology and director of the UIW Honors Program, is part of a group that received grant funding from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation’s Equitable Pathways program. The landmark $5 million grant will support 20 different partnerships across various organizations to build equitable pathways, helping Black, Indigenous and Latina/o students advance into STEM graduate studies.
The University of the Incarnate Word Religious Studies Department held its 20th annual Pierre Lecture on March 16, via Zoom. This year’s presentation, titled “Do THE WORK: Antiracism and the U.S. Catholic Church” was presented by Tia Noelle Pratt, PhD, director of Mission Engagement and Strategic Initiatives, Courtesy Assistant Professor of Sociology, and editor-elect of the Journal of Catholic Social Thought at Villanova University.
Sandra Guzman Foster, PhD, associate professor in the Graduate Studies Program at the University of the Incarnate Word Dreeben School of Education, has been selected for the Outstanding Teaching Award, Postsecondary by the National Association for Multicultural Education (NAME). She will be recognized at the organization’s virtual conference on April 29-20. Guzman Foster was nominated by two separate parties, a cohort of her students and a group of her peers across the state.
Spring Break is typically known as a time for students to hang out with friends, take a trip, and relax and recharge for the remainder of the semester. But for a group of UIW students who participated in the Alternative Spring Break, coordinated by the Office of Mission and Ministry, Spring Break was a time to give back. UIW is proud to announce it has joined the international effort to address global warming. The platform builds upon the 2015 encyclical from Pope Francis titled, “Laudato Si’, on Care for our Common Home.”

The University of the Incarnate Word welcomed home the schools that make up the Brainpower Connection for a special rededication ceremony on Wednesday, Feb. 16, on the Broadway Campus. UIW President Thomas M. Evans, PhD, and Dreeben School of Education Dean Denise Staudt, EdD, spoke at the event.
UIW is proud to announce it has received an $85,000 donation for the Primary Care Residency Programs at the Laredo Medical Center. This latest gift from the Matias De Llano Charitable Trust brings the total donations from that trust to $415,000 since 2018. The International Bank of Commerce (IBC) in Laredo oversees the Matias De Llano Charitable Trust.
The University of the Incarnate Word’s student-run television station, UIWtv, has been awarded first place in the 2022 Television National Signature Station from the Broadcast Education Association (BEA). This is the first such honor for UIWtv.
The University of the Incarnate Word Police Department’s Sgt. Ryan Ladson and Officer Lenard Thomas joined the San Antonio Police Department and approximately 40 other agencies for a swearing in ceremony at Community Bible Church on Monday as 10-year-old Devarjaye “DJ” Daniel became an honorary UIWPD officer. Daniel becomes UIWPD’s first honorary police officer in the department’s history.
The University of the Incarnate Word Sustainability Advisory Board and the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership and Sustainability (ECCL) have partnered with UIW Athletics to host the inaugural Green Game on Feb. 17 at the McDermott Convocation Center. The event surrounds the women’s basketball game at 5:30 p.m. CT and the men’s game at 7:30 p.m., with both teams facing Northwestern State University.
The University of the Incarnate Word Department of Music, in collaboration with Texas Lutheran University, hosted a Florence Price Celebration (1887-1953) on Feb. 5-6, honoring the legacy of one of the 20th century’s most notable Black women composers. Price wrote over 300 works and was the first Black woman to have her music performed by a major symphony orchestra.
When TJ Wright and Gerald Bowie III met with the UIW football team in the summer of 2020, they knew they wanted to do more to promote social justice, so together they created a student organization and called it As One We Will.
Dr. Ann D. David, associate professor of Teacher Education at the Dreeben School of Education, was named the 2022 University Teacher of the Year by the Texas Council of Teachers of English Language Arts (TCTELA). She will receive the award at the 57th TCTELA Annual Conference in Galveston, Texas, on Feb. 18-20.
The University of the Incarnate Word Rosenberg School of Optometry (UIWRSO) is proud to announce the publication of a groundbreaking new study that found special EnChroma glasses, engineered with technically advanced spectral notch filters, enhance color vision for those with the most common types of color vision deficiency. It should be noted that test subjects with color blindness experienced immediate improvement, which persisted long-term even after subjects stopped wearing the glasses.
The University of the Incarnate Word Department of Theatre Arts will continue its 2021-2022 season with the classic French comedy Tartuffe by Moliere and adapted by Richard Wilbur. The show opens at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, in the Coates Theatre on the Broadway campus.

Dr. David Vequist, professor of Management in the University of the Incarnate Word’s H-E-B School of Business and Administration and the founder/director of the University’s Center for Medical Tourism Research (CMTR), was honored with the E-Tourism Global Novel Award by the Mall of Fame Nigeria. He was presented the award during the E-Tourism Business Awards and Conference on Feb. 1-2.

For Mayte Alvarado, a sophomore Psychology major with a concentration in Neuroscience on the pre-med path at the University of the Incarnate Word, service has been ingrained in her upbringing since birth. UIW, in conjunction with Texas Lutheran University (TLU), is proud to present the Florence Price Celebration. The goal of the Florence Price Celebration is to introduce up and coming musicians to the life and music of this wonderful composer and inspire their creative endeavors. The celebration takes place the weekend of February 5 and 6 on the campuses of UIW in San Antonio and TLU in Seguin.
UIW is pleased to announce the return of the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, program. The program provides free tax preparation services from IRS certified volunteers to households with incomes of $58,000 or less and helps working families take advantage of all of the tax credits that they are eligible for. The VITA program engages UIW faculty and student volunteers from the UIW H-E-B School of Business and Administration (HEBSBA) help prepare basic, current year tax returns for these eligible taxpayers at no charge.

Agapao Ministry is geared towards reconnecting the UIW community with the CCVI Sisters, including those at The Village at Incarnate Word. When trying to decide on a name for the ministry, Rozlyn Bermea, along with UIW Mission and Ministry staff, tossed around a few ideas. They wanted to truly encompass how powerful the love of the Sisters is and always has been.
Stephen Goffar, PT, DPT, PhD, dean of the University of the Incarnate Word School of Physical Therapy, has announced Dr. Scott Shaffer as the school's associate dean for Academic Affairs.

Warren Fulgenzi, a graduate student on the men’s tennis team, did not start his college journey at the University of the Incarnate Word. But when he decided to move on from Our Lady of Lake University, Fulgenzi did not have to look far to find some familiar faces across the tennis court.

As I reflect upon this time frame from Spring Break of 2019 until now and the impact the Ettling Center and the University community made to support the needs of so many that have been affected by COVID-19, I feel as if we, as a UIW community, have been able to continue to walk in the footsteps of the three Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word that were asked to “go” and help those in need during a pandemic so very long ago.
When Athletic Director Richard Duran – who came to UIW as the deputy athletic director in October 2017 – took the reins of the department in August 2019, he says the department was operating as a silo rather than working with its campus partners. Duran understood that this needed to change.
Dr. Ashley S. Love, associate professor of Education in the Graduate Studies Program at the Dreeben School of Education, has been elected to the 2022-2023 Board of Trustees at the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE). She will be inducted at the 73rd Annual SOPHE Digital Conference taking place March 22-25.
As the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine (UIWSOM) founding dean, Dr. Robyn Phillips-Madson prepares to retire, she reflects on her time helping start UIW’s osteopathic medical school. “To be a founding dean has been an incredible experience,” said Phillips-Madson. “The more I learned about UIW and the position, the more I was convinced that this was a mission and university I could commit to wholeheartedly.”
Dr. Ronda Gottlieb, UIW director of Clinical Health, has been part of UIW’s team of first responders since the onset of the pandemic. As she recounts, “On Jan. 9, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a mysterious coronavirus-related pneumonia in Wuhan, China. At that point, cases were very low in China, but on January 20, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) began screening for Coronavirus at three U.S. international airports. When the first confirmed U.S. case of COVID-19 was identified in Washington state, the UIW Incident Command team began officially meeting."
Dr. Michael McGuire spent 31 years as a professor of economics at the University of the Incarnate Word. He and his wife, Patience, also a retired educator, have established the Dr. Mike McGuire Scholarship Endowment for Mission-Inspired Business Leadership. The $300,000 endowment will allow for a $10,000 scholarship to be awarded to one business student every year. Recipients of this scholarship must not only show accomplishment in the classroom, but a true understanding of the Mission of UIW.

The University of the Incarnate Word’s Autonomous Vehicle Systems (AVS) Research Lab is excited to announce that the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word has funded the GEMS after-school miniGEMS clubs for the upcoming FIRST LEGO League (FLL) competitions. A generous $5,000 award from the CCVI “Sisters supporting women for a better world” grant will help support the GEMS after-school programs.
The University of the Incarnate Word Student Nurses Association (SNA) received the 2021 Image of Nursing Award and the Breakthrough to Nursing Award from the Texas Nursing Students Association (TNSA). The TNSA is a direct constituent of the National Student Nurses’ Association.
