PAVE Program

Peer Advisors for Veterans Education (PAVE) is a peer support program that connects incoming student veterans on college campuses with student veterans who are trained as Peer Advisors who can help students navigate college life, address challenges they may face, refer them to appropriate resources on and off campus, and provide ongoing college support.

UIW was selected as one of 18 schools in the nation to join the PAVE program in Fall 2020.

Phillip Rangel headshot photoPhillip J. Rangel

Pave Team Leader

Phillip is a retired Air Force veteran. He is currently a student at the University of Incarnate Word, in the Ph.D. program, studying Organizational Leadership and Adult Education. Two-time graduate of UIW having earned a B.A. in Criminal Justice/minor Sociology in 2017 and M.S. Organizational Development and Leadership in 2018. His last ten years in the USAF, he was assigned to the North American Aerospace Defense Command and U.S. Northern Command Inspector General (NORAD/USNORTHCOM). Phillip is on the UIW Alumni Association Board, and a member of UIW Student Veterans America (SVA).

Omar is a retired Navy veteran. He joined the military in 1994 and retired in July 2019, with over 25 years of service. During his active duty, he deployed to several countries, serving in various capacities. His tours in the U.S. primarily consisted of leadership roles overseeing regional recruiting efforts. Omar is currently pursuing a BA in Organizational Development from UIW, with an expected graduation date of December 2020. After this, he plans on pursuing an MBA. He enjoys spending time with his family, cooking and exercising.

Jeff is a retired USAF veteran with 24 years of service. He is a survivor of the 9-11 terrorist attack on the Pentagon. Jeff is on the UIW Alumni Board and is pursuing a Ph.D. in Higher Education at UIW. He is also an Arkansas native who enjoys fishing and spending time with his wife and two boys.

Robert Greener is a prior enlisted Captain in the United States Army with twenty years of service. He has served in the Army Reserve, Army National Guard and on Active Duty. He is a Physician Assistant and has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and various humanitarian missions to include Haiti. Robert has a masters degree in Physician Assistant Studies and is in the Ph.D in Education program at UIW studying Organizational Leadership.

Jessica is a retired Navy veteran with a broad and diverse background. She was an Army dependent while her father was stationed in Germany, where she attended DoDDS elementary school. She served as an electronics technician onshore and at sea, retiring in 2017. As a seafaring Sailor, she was onboard a USNS, a cruiser, and a carrier. She has done tours as a recruiter, classifier, and instructor and has been stationed in Italy and Japan. She enjoys working with people. She is a mother of three children and married to a retired Navy veteran. Jessica is currently pursuing a B.S. in Psychology at the School of Professional Studies and is expected to graduate in December 2021.

Jared is a Georgia Army National Guard veteran with 6 years of service. He served as a wheeled vehicle mechanic and ammunition specialist. He enjoys learning about various cultures and different foods each background has to offer. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his significant other, Annalise, and two senior dogs, Lady and Bear. Jared is currently pursuing a BS in Rehabilitative Sciences (Pre-Occupational Therapy Track) at UIW and is expected to graduate in December of 2023.

Regina Proctor-Richard was born and raised in Washington, D.C., by way of Maryland, where her parents and sisters live. However, she claims San Antonio as her home, and she believes to be a true San Antonian. She is married to Tim Richard and has a beautiful blended family. She retired in October 2019 after honorably serving twenty years in the U.S. Army and fifteen of the twenty years in the medical field as a Respiratory Therapist. During her Army service, she was in and out of college and was not consistent in pursuing her education as planned. However, she decided that once she retired, she would focus on my education goals. She began her education with UIW in the Fall of 2019, seeking a BA in Health Science with a concentration in Administration and a minor in Human Resources. She is currently a senior projected to graduate in May of 2023. She is currently a member of Student Veterans of America (SVA), and in the Fall of 2020, she became an SVA officer as the Secretary. In addition, she is now serving as a peer advisor with PAVE and looks forward to assisting fellow veterans who, like her, are entering into a new chapter and transitioning from Military servicemember to UIW student.
